The solvent extraction process of edible oil is a key step to extract oil from various raw materials (such as seeds, nuts and oily crops) with solvents. This method, utilizing solvents like hexane, offers significant advantages in terms of efficiency, yield, and versatility compared to traditional mechanical pressing methods. Extractor: According to production and operation modes, methods and equipment for oil extraction can be divided into batch and continuous types .

Desolventizer: Vital for separating solvent from wet meal, KMEC’s desolventizers ensure the removal of solvent residues from the extracted material.

Key Steps in the Solvent Extraction Process

Preparation of raw materials: The process begins with the preparation of raw materials, which may involve cleaning, drying, and grinding to facilitate efficient oil extraction.

Extraction: The prepared materials are then fed into an extractor, where it is subjected to solvent extraction. In this step, the solvent (typically hexane) is passed through the material, dissolving the oil content and forming a solution known as miscella.

Desolventizing: Once the oil is extracted, the next step involves desolventizing to remove the solvent from the oil-bearing materials or meals. This is typically achieved through a combination of heating and vacuum application, allowing the solvent to evaporate and leaving behind the extracted oil.

Distillation: The solvent-rich miscella obtained from the extraction process undergoes distillation to separate the solvent from the oil. This distillation process involves heating the miscella to evaporate the solvent, which is then condensed and recovered for reuse.

Oil Refining: The extracted oil may undergo further refining processes such as degumming, neutralization, bleaching, and deodorization to improve its quality, taste, and shelf life.

Solvent Recovery: Lastly, the recovered solvent undergoes purification and recycling for reuse in subsequent extraction cycles, making the process environmentally sustainable and cost-effective.
